People suck. I keep my circle small. Quality over quantity.
I have pretty bad social anxiety as well...even though I'm a nurse lol. I'm always the most quiet in my group of friends. Although, doing a career that forces you to interact with people has really helped with my social anxiety.

The first step is acceptance and acknowledging the problem. The next step is how you tackle and work on it.
Take things slow and start greeting strangers every day. You will then start getting more comfortable and eventually be able to initiate conversations.
I have this condition as well and wouldn't say its a problem.. I will have conversations with loved ones, friends, family, etc without a problem. I can be ackward around strangers if sometimes.. I counteracted this problem by first realizing if people are acting a certain way towards me all the time it had to be because of my own personality giving a continous string of reactions to others. I worked on social engineering and the best thing i did was go out alot of put down the computer and interact with society. I worked alot of myself, and let me tell you technology is a curse when it comes to ruining your social dynamics.. it expands from computer, smartphone, tablets, etc..
