If licensed, the best one for real time protection is malwarebytes. It is also good for ransomware.
But the free version will lack on real time protection.

Malwarebytes (Premium) is probably the best all around

It depends on how well the rats are coded, having a good suite like kaspersky, eset or a good combo if you're really paranoiac eg eset+malwarebytes+a few scans a month using hitmanpro may keep you protected from most threats.
But you shouldn't let a protection suite to replace your common sense.

    I use Malewarebytes,
I also use Kaspersky only when I'm downloading certain files. A lot of times Kaspersky fucks with some of my programs which is annoying so I just leave it off unless I know I'm downloading something shady.

I use Malwarebytes with the license deactivated so it only scans on demand. If you want real time protection, give the inbuilt windows defender (if you are on windows) a shot, it doesn't drag on the system like third party ones.

Windows Defender is actually quite good, it does it job and does not seem to impact performance at least not what I have noticed.
