Anyone worked out how to play the same character?

Had 2 Gibraltars in the same squad when I played and was curious how they done it, one picked him and the other let the timer run out and got given him... Is this just random or is there a way to force it into giving you both the same character?

step one hover the same characters
step two player 1 selects a character player 2 lets it auto select
step three next game player 2 selects the character player 1 auto selects and its the same character from last game IE the character player 2 is playing

Doesn't seem to work, tested like 30 times.
