Dark Spirit Orbs, A Penny for your Foughts and the daily quest: Toiling with Terror are the quests you should do to get dark spirit orbs.

Feel free to alternate between Dark Spirit Orbs and A Penny for your Foughts. The lengths between both quests can differ depending on luck so one is not faster than the other really.

Dark Spirit Orbs lets you get Dark Energy which you can use to merge for more DSOs.
Penny for your thoughts only need a single 1% drop from monsters in /maul.

Both require a lot of luck with RNG.
Both are not technically better than the other.

All you really need is the first 10500 DSOs to get a Doom Metal to get the Doomknight Weapon Kit to make farming easier anyway.
