They can see your AC purchase history. If something looks fishy, such having an item exclusively available during January purchased on March it might raise some eyebrows. I wouldn't do it on my main, but I'd have no problems doing it on my alt.

It's unlikely they will ban you, don't think they have the time to look through random players' inventory and purchase history to check it matches with shop add and removal dates. As with everything on here, do it at your own risk.
