Firstly you should learn how to make correctly sized bitmaps for advanced objects.

    1) Learn the tools: photoshop, 3ds max, maya, and zbrush.
    2) follow some tutorials and learn the basic techniques and skills for each tool
    3) Follow step 2 again for harder / more advanced techniques
    4) When you run out of tutorials / are comfortable doing stuff on your own, start practicing and thinking about new techniques and new stuff to create.
    5) keep doing it forever.

Unlike other jobs in game development, you can't really just goto school and get a job. Working as an artist is all about having the skills, a good portfolio, and being able to create art that matches the style(s) they want. But doing lots of custom texture and model mods helps, as they see that you are familiar with the process and have experience working with games.

That's just about the last thing I learned to do
Get a program and learn to use the basics. Work your way up, and you'll be a pro in no time

Learn the programs, in this order:

    1. Photoshop
    2. Blender
    3. 3DS Max/Maya
    4. AE

Know how to use plugins effectively. Camera positioning, light source, realistic rendering. Just keep doing it. Sooner or later, it will click and you'll be ready to take on a big project.
