Beware of the new beta feature:
Fire will spread anywhere within 3 blocks, so lanterns in wood = fail
If
= wood 
= glass and 
= lava and you'll place it like
the wood will burn! Also if you have like a lava block here
and 
= air
wood will flame like
So be aware of the new features, glass conducts heat to so even
, the wood will catch fire...
(this one is not confirmed yet!)

This is stupid. Notch needs to leave these game elements alone. I am tired of people always wanting more stuff, with no compensation for gameplay. Look at MW2 for example.

I personally found this out by going to my lava cave. It's a big dungeon so I marked the way to the lava with blocks of wood. My wood pillar was like 3 spaces away from the lava and it burned..
Lol now my house has a brick foundation. So now my lava moat can't burn up my house.

Obsidian > stone.
You dont even have to worry about creepers. And before someone says anything, I am using a texture pack, and if you dont like the graphics of minecraft you should go get one.

I posted all of my obsidian house in another thread. Its all legit too. I set up an obsidian factory. Lava used to be hard to get, but after the haloween update, all I needed was a way to get 7 buckets of lava up and down and I had ez obsidian.
Lava can also shoot fireballs out of the lava pit o.o
