Hardware is like "O HAI PROCESSOR I HAVE TO TELL YOU SUMFIN"
Hardware is like "O HAI RAIS INTERRUPT"
PIC Is Like "O HAI LOOK ITS AN INTERRUPT FROM HARDWARE, WHAT IS THIS MAPPED TO?"
PIC is like "OHAI, I KNOW, IMA TELL THE PROCESSOR"
processor is like "OHAI ITS AND INTERRUPT"
Processor is like "O HAI I'LL LOOK IN THE IDT (interrupt descriptor table)"
IDT is like "O HAI THE IRQ x CORRESPONDS TO y(a location in non-paged memory"
Processor is like "O HAI Preseve stack & call corresponding routine"

That's a radically simplified version of it :X But hopefully it will present you with a model to work off of. I wrote a paper a while ago for my IT Class; I'll ask my teacher if I can post it.
