    Server

    Hello,

I was wondering, how do I host my own server and give it a domain.

Like with xampp you can make a local server. I want that but for everyone. And also make it have a domain instead of the ip.

Can someone give me a link to somewhere that explains how to do this. Or just explain here if it's not too long.

(Windows or Linux, no Mac please)

Oh and sorry if this isn't the right section.

    Depends.

If you want to host it at home, download err, some LAMP like XAMPP and set it up.

Make sure you've port forwarded port 80 (and 443 if you want SSL) to your computer, purchase a domain, set the nameservers to some DNS service like https://dns.he.net, set the A and/or AAAA record(s) to your home IP, wait a bit, and viola.

    Rushed, I know.

    Fine
I'm not sure if these dev servers like XAMPP and UniServer are configured to work with external connections, so you might want to make sure no rules in the apache config are conflicting with your wishes

I got the server up and running.
But now you need to connect to my ip-address, so I need a domain.

Is there a way to get .com domains for free?

    Otherwise I'll just pay it.

no, there is no way to get .com domains free. You can get .****** domains free, however.

Oh okay I'll buy a domain then when I have all the files ready.

But seeing I can't make myself a domain name makes me wonder what those domain sites do. (Like godaddy and so)

They pay ICANN a few thousand dollars a year for the ability to register and domain names. They are responsible for all the legal costs and must be responsible etc...

You need to be loaded if you want to do that - ICANN | Accreditation Overview
