Yeh theres no need for it really. I'd suggest you smudge with a smaller brush and layer up complimenting colours to get a better results. KIU.

Try using variations on the strength of your smudge brush. Try put in some more colours to add more variety as well. Don't be afraid to add in some nice lighting as well, like @artemon did in his signature.

If you want I can link you to some nice smudging psds. They wont tell what type of brush the guy uses but it's something like a hard circle brush set to 85-95% strength.
