1. 4/(x+1) = 2/(2x+1)

Multiply left and right side by 2x+1
Multiply left and right side by x+1

You get
4(2x+1) = 2(x+1)
8x + 4 = 2x + 2
6x = -2
x = -1/3

2. y = 2x - 1 and y = x^2
Since y is y, you can replace x^2 with y in the 1st equation.

x^2 = 2x
x^2 - 2x = 0
x(x-2) = 0

Set both factors equal to 0
x = 0 or x - 2 = 0
Solve for both you get
x = 0 or x = 2
