I'm in! Now what?
The first time you login to the vSide Client, you will be taken to Gateway, a short tutorial where Nene teaches you the vSide Basics. You get vPoints in Gateway too.
When you complete Gateway, you can go to your apartment or to the PCD Club in New Venezia. So invite your friends to join you and make new friends in world. You can explore, chat, dance together, and so much more! Read this these FAQs for more information.
When you first log in to vSide you will be presented with the Go Directory. The Go Directory shows you all the hottest parties and happenin' places going on right now. Click on one of them, click the Map tab to choose a District, or click "My Place" to go to your very own Apartment.
Lost in vSide? Simply click on the Go button in your button bar to get to the Go Directory and City Maps, or jump to any of the Plazas, Residencies, Clubs, Shops, or your own vSide Apartment. You can also get a live overhead map of your current location on the Radar from the Tools menu button.
What are those icons at the bottom and lower left of the screen?
The button bar is located at the bottom of your vSide screen. You can navigate to different places, change your look, emote and dance, change your settings, and much more from the button bar.
On the lower left of your vSide screen is the Heads Up Display (HUD). The HUD shows you helpful information in vSide such as the current music playing, info on other vSiders, status messages from vSide, and more.
How do I control the view?
There are several ways to control your (camera) view:
Click the Me button in the button bar and select View. Your view will cycle between normal, orbit camera, and first-person modes each time you select View
F7 also cycles between View modes
Use right-mouse-down and drag for mouse look
CTRL-up-arrow and CTRL-down-arrow tilt the camera
The mouse wheel and CTRL-- (dash symbol) and CTRL-= (equal symbol) zoom in and out
How do I change clothes? How do I get more clothes?
Click the Me button on the button bar and select Closet or hit F5 to bring up your wardrobe. There are four tabs: Body, Closet, Shops, and Snapshot. Set your body attributes in the Body tab, then dress yourself in the Closet. You can save up to 12 different outfits on the hangers below. To create an outfit, first click on a hanger and then select your clothes. Your outfit will be saved to that hanger!
You can get more clothes, accessories, and cool merch in vSide Shops. Press the Shop button or F5 when inside a store, or click the Shops tab in your Closet to go shopping. More info about shopping is on our vPoints, vBux, and Shopping FAQ.

Can I chat while idle?
No. You can use just about all of the vSide UI and still remain idle, but as soon as you start typing a message, you will no longer be idle.
How do I add friends on vSide?
To add someone as your friend on vSide, right-click on their avatar or name and select "Add to Friends". You can also type /add username or add someone from their vSide web profile. A notification will be sent to that person requesting friendship. After that person accepts your friend request, s/he will show up on your friends list and you on their list.
How do I accept or decline a friend request?
When you receive a friend request, you will get a message in the Word tab of the HUD and it will display on your profile and dashboard when you are logged in to vSide.com. You can accept or decline the friendship by clicking on the Accept or Decline links. You can also accept or decline pending friend requests from the People button and select Requests, on the second tab of your Friends list panel, or you can type /acceptall or /declineall.
Where is my friends list?
In the button bar, click the People button and select Friends, or press F3 to bring up the Friends panel. Here you can keep track of your vSide friends, your pending friends requests, and your AIM buddies.
I see some friends online. How do I get to their location quickly?
You can teleport directly to friends by right-clicking on their name in your Friends list and selecting "Teleport To". You can also type /teleport username.
What are bots?
Bots are non-player characters (NPCs) that are automated by vSide and are not real people. For example, the apartment realtors and club bartenders are bots. All bots have the text "(bot)" after their username above their avatar.
Some bots are interactive. You'll just have to visit them to find out which ones!
Is there a friend limit?
Not officially, but you shouldn't just add everyone under the sun. We recommend that you keep it under 500. Choose your friends carefully; with a smaller frirends list, your list will be easier to manage and vSide performance will be better.
How to I see/manage my offline friends?
The client will only show the number of offline friends. You need to login to your profile if you want to manage your offline friends.
Is there a way to group friends? e.g. best friends or vHubby/vWife?
Not at this time.
Anything else I need to know about friends?
Right-click on a pending friend request to accept, decline, or cancel a friend request. Double-click on an AIM buddy to send an IM via AIM from within vSide
How do I dance and emote?
Dances and Emotes are available in the Actions panel. Click the Me button on the button bar and then selection Actions, or hit F4 to bring up the Actions panel. Click on the name of the dance or emote that you want your avatar to perform.
You can also type the name of the dance or emote in the message box. Precede your text with a forward slash if your want to type a dance emote without it appearing in the chat bubble.
For example: /sit, /rotfl, or /lingylicious
Some phrases will trigger emotes when you type them. For example, cya or ttyl will emote a "wave".
Can I assign my favorite dances and emotes to their own function keys?
Yes. Simply click the "Edit Action Hotkeys" button in the Actions panel and then bind next to your favorite emotes and dances to set shortcut keys for them. Your favorite dances and emotes will show up in a new "Favorite Actions" menu along with their key shortcut.
How can I see what I look like when I'm emoting?
From the Me button in the button bar, use View to cycle your camera view between normal, orbit, and first person modes. You can see what you look like from the front by selecting View in the Me button or by pressing F7 until you get to the orbit cam view.
How come so-and-so's gestures look different than mine?
There are four Moods you can set for your avatar: Confident, Relaxed, Upbeat, and Blue. Set your mood in the Actions panel from the Me button on the button bar. Your gesture animations will be different depending on your mood.
Can I script Dances and Emotes?
Yes. Press CTRL-T to activate the Studio Dancetastique. The Studio Dancetastique lets you record a sequence of emotes/dances so you can play them back, share them with your friends, etc. Great for Dance Competitions. For more info and sample dances, see this forum announcment.
How do I take pictures in vSide?
You can take pictures in vSide and post them directly to your profile photo album! From the Tools button on the button bar, select Camera. You can also press Ctrl + b to take profile album pics. There is a 50 photo limit for vSide Photo Albums.
Alternately, you can take screen shots and save them to your hard drive with Ctrl + Alt + s. The images will be saved to your vSide screenshots folder (usually C:/Program Files/vSide/screenshots/ or on Mac ~/Library/Application Support/Doppelganger/vSide/screenshots).
I'm on a Mac and can't right-click, or the Fn keys (function keys) don't work as expected!
Use Ctrl + click to get to the right-click menu if you are using the Macintosh client and a one-button mouse. Fn key equivilants in the vSide application and as described in these help pages can be accessed by pressing Option + the desired Fn key (i.e. Option and F1 at the same time).
Alternately, go into your System Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse and select the option to use the Function keys as Fn keys instead of Mac OS X preprogrammed keys.
What are those grey circles all over the place?
These are "interact" icons. Click them to do things like sit on couches, lean against rails, or even meditate.
How do I set my away message?
Right-click on your avatar and choose "Edit Away Message." The away message will display over your head once you go idle. You can force immediate idle by typing: /away
You can also set your away message in the "Social" tab of the Settings panel in the Tools button on the button bar.
What are the animated ( : smilies : ) around someone's user name?
After you have filled out your profile, you can meet other people that have the same interest tags as you if you see someone with : ) animated emoticons around their user name. Click on any user online in vSide to view their mini-bio in the Affinity HUD and see what tags you have in common!
How can I see the mini-bio of any vSide user while in vSide?
To get the mini-bio of any vSide user while inside vSide, click once on a user's avatar or user name, or type /whois and the person's user name. Example usage: /whois tracier. The user's mini bio will show in the Affinity panel of the HUD.
What are applause points for?
Applause points just show how much applause and appreciation someone has received recently. Applause points do not turn into vPoints or vBux.
Help, I can't move my avatar! I'm Stuck. What do I do?
Occasionally, you might get "stuck" and cannot move. If this happens, don't panic! Simply right-click on yourself and select "Respawn Me", type /respawn, or teleport to a friend or a bot on your Friends list.
How do I change window sizes?
To resize your vSide window, in Windows use your mouse to drag any of the sides of the window, and on Mac OS X use your mouse to drag the bottom right corner of the window.
Can I change the aspect ratio of my window?
Yes. From the button bar, choose Tools > Settings or press F6. In the "Visual" Tab, uncheck the "Lock Window Proportions" check box
