I don't see why people recommend learning VB first. Its not like c++ just rushes into everything. If you read Sam's Learn c++ in 21 days, , you'll notice its meant for total noobs. read it slowly and carefully. take more than 21 days if u want. Do LOTS of practice!!!! Don't look at code and expect you can understand the concept... Also, my first language is c++ and i felt very comfortable with c++ as my first language.

Read the C++ for Dummies books, the all in one desk reference. It's how I got started, along with some help from @Hell_Demon
Code::Blocks is a good C/C++ program.
