Before we start, I know it's no big leap in hardware for consoles because PC will always be the King of Hardware, but if Sony does release a new optical media drive with the PS4 or 'Orbis' then things will change up once again.

Slotted for a 2016 release date it's not unlikely that it could be released a head of schedule if Sony jumps on board and pushes the project into production.

A new version of the PlayStation 4 development kit is now being shipped out to game developers.

The second version is essentially just a modified PC. There is to be four versions overall, with the third version due to be sent out in January and the last and final version to be sent in Summer 2013. The first version, released earlier this year, was essentially just a graphics card.

Game developers attended a disclosure meeting this week at Sony where they were shown presentations and given information of the project. Sony is refusing to call the project the "PlayStation 4" but instead is calling it "Orbis". "Orbis, is based on the AMD’s A10 APU series. An APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) is a combined CPU and GPU".

• Ability to run 1080p games and 60FPS in 3D.
• 256Gb standard HDD.
• WiFi, ethernet and HDMI output.

Sony is said to be designed an XMB that will allow the player to access anywhere on the system while in game, and essentially purchase new content from the store without having to leave the game. The system will always be in standby mode and will download system updates and game patches automatically as they come available.

I'm really liking the Standby Mode, and the new XMB features.

But one thing I really wish Sony had done, that the Xbox could do is like.. the group chat while in-game, and be able to listen to music while In-game too.

But i'm still a PS3 Fanboy. :/

HDD instead of SSD I guess that's for marketing reason to make it more affordable. I'm also a big fan AMD and I believe that the APU architecture they're introducing is obviously superior to Intel's i7 when speaking about optimizing graphics performance, which is what is truly needed in a console of course. So far so good.

Yeah, I would like that implemented into the next console as well, but I think Sony likes to focus all the hardware's power and resources into the running of the actual game instead of background task's.

Good point, hardware-wise PS3 > Xbox. Hopefully we get some new information on the next-gen Xbox console so we can compare.

With the way technology constantly evolves, I would say they would only be up to scratch (barely) for a few months.
