Watch Das Boot (1981) for a timeless classic. Although shot entirely in German, the film rose to enough prominence to retain its original name when entering the US cinemas. Set place in the midst of World War II, this movie follows the experiences of the crew onboard the U-boat U-95. Additionally, the soundtrack is phenomenal; it gives the thriller aspect a huge bonus. The movie is partially niche nowadays due to its length (More than four hours long) and it's audio being entirely in German. I would recommend watching it with subtitles because the acting is great and does not deserve to be missed out on.
For a more modern film, I would recommend the neo-western No Country for Old Men (2008). From start to finish, this movie is doused in suspense. The antagonist, Anton Chigurh, is played by Javier Bardem, who won an Oscar for his outstanding performance; although, I think the bar for acting was raised very high that year due to the incredible acting done by all cast. Unlike most thrillers, this movie does not rely on popular cliches. More often than not, in scenes, there is no music meant to raise artificial suspense from the viewer. This movie is probably one of the best of the 21st century so far.
