Well, there's "trolling FOR..." (such as trolling for girls, which is like fishing for them with a big net to get them).

But I assume you mean referring to users as trolls.

Think about what trolls are like, in books like Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings: Big, dumb, lumbering brutes that go around bashing everyone and everything with big clubs; destroying just fo rthe pleasure of destroying.

Since the Internet began to include discussion sites and similiar formums (fora?), there have been people who try to disrupt them by posting inflamatory material.

They like the negative attention, and the fact that they can disrupt the site, preventing people from doing what they're really there for.

The word caught on as a description of those types of behaviors, and is now common.

So, for instance, people who go to the Gender & Women's Studies category here, and post woman-bashing garbage, are considered trolls. They just do it to get a rise out of the humans.

Familiarize yourself with the Guidelines for this site (link, bottom of most pages). When you see violation, use Report It.

Help make this a (relatively) troll-free site.

Oh, and the best advice in general is "Don't feed the trolls." That is, don't respond to them. It just encourages them. When they're ignored, they go away and try to destroy some other site.
