A branch of physics that deals in the belief of the existence of multiple parallel universes with physical constants different from our own (Example: The speed of light, gravitational effects, visible light spectrum) and the theory that there are multiple dimensions past the 4th.

Just like the idea of God, it's a well developed theory; we just don't have the tools needed to prove it true.

Well I'd say String theory is a branch of quantum mechanics along with Loop Quantum Gravity. Making them sub-branches of physics. String theory and LQG are developing theories that are not set in stone, much like the quantum world. I heard LQG was being tested but I haven't taken the time to investigate the findings if any.

Unlike The "God" hypothesis, physics can be tested. All sciences were at one point "fringe", so cut String Theory some slack.
