Dark Souls II is in development, this was confirmed after the VGA reveal last December. At the time of the reveal, the game was only “roughly 25 per cent finished” as reported by Edge Magazine. A bulk of that might have been due to the new graphics engine Dark Souls II utilizes. This was disclosed in a 4Gamer interview between a journalist and Tomohiro Shibuya, the Co-Director of Dark Souls II. Shibuya also briefly explained the benefits of a new engine, “I think the shading and lighting tech will allow us to create a more natural atmosphere, and we have a lot more expressive capabilities when it comes to the characters and monsters” (roughly translated). A new engine this late into a console’s life cycle only makes sense if it’s also targeting next generation consoles as well.
Edge Magazine also wrote that the in-game graphics they saw during their demonstration rivaled the CG trailer that was shown during the VGAs. It was on par with that they had seen from Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs, and Lucas Art’s Star Wars: 1313. Both games are also confirmed to hit current generation systems as well as next generation consoles. The possibility of Dark Souls II to be a cross generation title is high, many signs point it and it seems to be the way most companies are ‘testing the waters’ using this approach. We can expect developers to fully reveal their projects after the next Xbox is officially announced.
Dark Souls II is currently slated to hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the PC.
