After the disaster game that was the new SimCity, Maxis is going out of business.
The creator of the troubled game has acknowledged that they just didn't have enough skill to get the job done.

Also, video games can cost a lot of money to develop. Final Fantasy 7 had a budget of 45 million dollars, just for development, back in 1995.

I'm not doubting that, but you cited Maxis being owned by EA as a reason for why they'd never go bankrupt. Not only that, but brand value is worth more than copies sold. If the brand is no longer valuable shareholders will cull it. Seeing how broken Simcity is and the massive outcry, it is a likely course of action should they fail to hold up sales throughout the next financial year.
