There are plenty of threads in Hacks and cheats or in Tutorials and Source if you look through it, look for any threads that say 'source codes', should be explanations on how to update in them, or at least what to search for.

I tried hexing one only to find:

"Socket-Sever Protocol Error: RangeError: Error #1125"

Hopefully this has nothing to do with their promise to start banning hackers.

I got that too and it has nothing to do with that.

The UPDATE packet got modified ... if you use any old client which still expects tileType to be unsignedByte when it now is unsignedShort you will get protocol errors or other unexpected behavior.
