It did say that it was unstable and that it is recommended that you make a backup of the characters.db

No, the game won't load if your character is sufficiently corrupted.
My bad, sorry.

I did say backup your characters.db though, until I can get proper serialization I'm Mirror()ing some of the data which is pretty unsafe (Version 0.2 should've fixed the random crashes when writing in v0.1 though).
