Best language to start with?

If you want to learn how to program in python you can go to Codecademy and there they will have several languages you can learn after python like JavaScript, PHP and such. It's a really organized and thorough tutorial

It is made for starting languages. I don't know if you even tried it, but you will notice that their tutorials take it really slow and easy, it's made for first time programmers and it's the most guidance you can get when you are programming for the first time and you don't even know what a variable is.

I also disagree with your statement that Python isn't a great language to start with, it can be used in so many things, you can use it for web programming, you can even use the .NET framework with IRONPython, and you can use it for normal console apps and it's especially great for tedious tasks and so much more....

Don't take my word for it though, the University of California Irvine (UC Irvine) is one of the most elite top 1% of universities in all of America for Computer Science and their first language that they start off all Computer Science students is Python. Therefore, Python is a good language to start with, and in reality it doesn't matter what language you start with, you will understand the basic concepts of programming using any language so it's good to just start with something and then branch out.
