Steins;Gate's White Fox Makes Anime Short for Space Satellite

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) opened a website for the GPM/DPR satellite project on Friday and began streaming a seven-minute anime short. White Fox, the studio that animated Steins;Gate, produced the short.

GPM/DPR stands for Global Precipitation Measurement/Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar — the satellites will observe rainfall and snowfall across virtually the entire world and probe for the mechanism behind Earth's precipitation cycle. Before March 2014, NASA and JAXA will launch the GPM project's core spacecraft on an H-II rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center. As planned, the onboard Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar will be able to make a precipitation map of the entire world in three hours.

The anime short was produced to send NASA (and all of the United States) to get the youth generation interested in space. JAXA has worked hand-in-hand with the anime industry before. Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide recorded a voice-acting cameo for the Space Brothers anime from the International Space Station last year. The agency also collaborated on three Galaxy Express 999 3D anime shorts, as well as on Robotics;Notes and Rocket Girls.

Mamoru Miyano, Nao Tōyama Lead Magical Warfare Anime's Cast



The official website for the anime adaptation of Hisashi Suzuki's Magical Warfare (Mahō Sensō) light novel announced the main cast and staff for the anime on Tuesday.
The cast is as follows:

• Asami Seto as Kurumi Isoshima
• Kenichi Suzumura as Kazumi Ida

The official Twitter account for the Comic Alive magazine's editors announced in July that anime adaptations for five of the MG Bunko J light novel titles have been green-lit, including Hisashi Suzuki's Magical Warfare (Mahō Sensō). The announcement was first made at Media Factory's Summer School Festival 2013 event.

In this modern magic action story, Takeshi Nanase is an ordinary high school boy who has a somewhat dark past. Due to certain circumstances, he formed a "fake" couple with his childhood friend Kurumi Isoshima, but otherwise, he lives a normal life. However, one day, he comes across a girl named Mui Aiba, in a uniform he has never seen before, collapsed on the school campus. This encounters changes Takeshi's destiny completely. Mui tells Takeshi that she is a magician, and she apologizes, for she turned Takeshi into a magician, too. What Takeshi once knew as one world is actually two — the world where magicians live and the world where humans live.

Suzuki launched the light novel series in 2011 with art by Lunalia, and Media Factory published the sixth volume in August. Yū Ibuki has been drawing the manga adaptation in Media Factory's Monthly Comic Gene magazine since this year, and briefly listed the anime as premiering in January.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3 TV Anime Slated for 2014



The wraparound jacket band on the fifth volume of Hirohiko Araki's JoJolion manga announced on Friday that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, the anime adaptation of Part 3 of Araki's original manga, will premiere next year.

Director N.ao.katsu Tsuda and series director Kenichi Suzuki are once again overseeing the anime at David Production. Yasuko Kobayashi is in charge of the series scripts, and Masahiko Komino is designing the characters.

David Production's earlier 26-episode television anime covered both Part 1: Phantom Blood and Part 2: Battle Tendency from the original manga. That anime wrapped in April.

Sengoku Koihime Game's ZEXCS Opening Anime Streamed



The official website for Sengoku Koihime ~Otome Kenran Sengoku Emaki~, the latest "historical adventure game" in BaseSon's Koihime franchise, began streaming the long version of game's opening anime sequence. Anime studio ZEXCS produced the sequence, and Faylan performs the theme song "Jikū no Pulse.

Unlike BaseSon's previous Koihime games and anime, which reimagined the Chinese literary classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms with a mostly female cast, Sengoku Koihime reimagines the warriors of Japan's Sengoku (warring states) period as female. It will ship for Windows on December 20.

The earlier Koihime games inspired three television anime series with video anime spinoffs.

Code Geass: Akito's 2nd BD/DVD Slated for December 25



The official website for the Code Geass: Akito the Exiled anime project announced on Wednesday that the second installment will ship on Blu-ray and DVD on December 25, after being delayed from this fall. The Blu-ray and DVD editions will have the teaser and full trailers, promotional videos, commercials, and a jacket by chief animation director Shuichi Shimamura. The regular-edition Blu-ray adds English and Japanese subtitles, while the limited-edition Blu-ray (pictured right) adds a booklet of original sketches by CLAMP, 24-page liner notes, a collection of ending illustration cards, a picture drama, audio commentaries by staff and cast, and a case with an exclusive illustration by character designer Takahiro Kimura.

The third installment, "Kagayaku-mono no Ten Yori Otsu" (The Brightness Falls), is scheduled to open in Japanese theaters next spring.

Kuroko's Basketball Ichiban Kuji Line Pulled Due to Poison Threat



The Sankei Sports newspaper is reporting that the convenience store chain Family Mart stopped selling the "Ichiban Kuji Kuroko no Basuke ~Seirin & Kaijō~" lottery merchandise line on Friday due to a poison threat. The Circle K Sunkus store chain is also considering suspending sales of the merchandise.

On Tuesday, Sankei Shimbun, Sophia University, 7-Eleven, and several other convenience store companies received new threat letters. The letters had claimed that the suspect had poisoned some of the "Voi-Colle Kuroko's Basketball Wafers 2" cookies in 7-Eleven stores, and also said that "X-Day" would be on the final day of Sophia University's school festival. 7-Eleven will continue to keep the wafers removed from stores until "X-Day," which will be on November 4. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department is currently searching for the suspect.

Banpresto had planned to sell the Ichiban Kuji products line near the end of October. The line would have included character dolls and plush toys as well as other products.

In December Banpresto had delayed the start of a previous Ichiban Kuji line for the Kuroko's Basketball franchise, and it was postponed until mid-January.

Since last October, locations linked to Kuroko's Basketball creator Tadatoshi Fujimaki have received threat letters with powdered and liquid substances. A source in the investigation of the threats said there is a high possibility that the liquid sent to Sophia University (Fujimaki's alma mater) on October 12, 2012 could emit a lethal dose of hydrogen sulfide if vaporized.
Several Kuroko's Basketball dōjinshi events throughout Japan have been cancelled in the aftermath of the threats. The "Shadow Trickster 3" event did proceed without incident at the Big Sight on last October, shortly after the center received its first threat. The official "Kuroko no Basuke produced by Namco Namja Town" event in Tokyo ended 19 days early as a result of the threats, and Animate Café Tennoji in Osaka cancelled a planned Kuroko's Basketball collaboration event. Comic Market (Comiket), the world's largest dōjinshi event, barred Kuroko's Basketball items and circles last December.

In February, the organizers of the Comic City dōjinshi events barred circles from selling Kuroko's Basketball items at March 17's Haru Comic City 18 event, after they received a request to do so from the management of the Tokyo Big Sight event complex. The same organizers had barred Kuroko's Basketball from the Comic City Osaka 92 event on January 6, and then cancelled February 10's Double Clutch event outright. However, they held the Comic City Tokyo 131 event at Tokyo Big Sight and insisted on allowing Kuroko's Basketball circles. Comic City Tokyo 131 proceeded without incident on January 27.

The second season of the Kuroko's Basketball anime began airing earlier this month in Japan. Crunchyroll is streaming the anime outside of Japan as it airs.

North American anime licensing company Sentai Filmworks confirmed the cast for the English dub of the NAKAIMO - My Little Sister Is Among Them! (Kono Naka ni Hitori, Imōto ga Iru!) anime on Wednesday.

John Swasey is directing the English dub. Sentai Filmworks will release the series on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on November 22.

Hajime Taguchi's original light novel series and its anime center around Shōgo Mikadono, the son of an industrial magnate named Kumagorō Mikadono who passed away. In his will, Kumagorō gave Shōgo a condition before Shōgo can inherit the family legacy — find his female mate at school. Shōgo transfers into a school to fulfill that condition. However, he learns that he has a younger sister who was separated at birth. He does not know what his long-lost sister looks like, but she happens to be one of the students at his new school.

Hori-san & Miyamura-kun School Manga Gets 2nd Video Anime



The November issue of Square Enix's G Fantasy magazine is announcing on Friday that HERO's Hori-san to Miyamura-kun manga is inspiring a second original video anime early this winter. The four-panel school comedy manga follows the "sweet-and-sour" adolescence of Kyōko Hori and Izumi Miyamura. Hori is the most popular girl at school, while Miyamura is an introverted, eyeglasses-wearing boy.

Asami Seto, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, Kana Ueda, and Yoshimasa Hosoya are reprising their roles as Hori, Miyamura, Yuki Yoshikawa, and Tōru Ishikawa, respectively. Matsuoka (as Miyamura) is also singing the ending theme song. Nobunaga Shimazaki is joining the cast as Hori's estranged childhood friend and student council president Kakeru Sengoku (top left in image). Yui Nomura plays Sengoku's obedient student council member Sakura Kōno (top center) who literally runs into Hori. Kei Imoto plays Honoka Sawada (top right), the girl next door who is attracted to Miyamura.

Writer Yuniko Ayana and character designer Kenichi Kutsuna are returning for the second anime at the studio Hoods Entertainment, but Erukin Kawabata is replacing Shingo Natsume as the director. Nobutaka Yoda is composing the music.

HERO launched the manga on Square Enix's Gangan Online website in 2007, and Square Enix published the 10th and final compiled book volume in December 2011. Artist Daisuke Hagiwara launched a spinoff manga called Hori-Miya in Monthly G Fantasy in 2011, and the fourth volume is shipping on October 26. The first original video anime shipped last fall.

Kuroko's Basketball Manga Sells Nearly 20 Million Copies




The 24 volumes of Tadatoshi Fujimaki's popular Kuroko's Basketball (Kuroko no Basuke) manga have sold 19.924 million copies as of Sunday, October 13, according to the market research firm Oricon. The 24th volume spent two weeks at #1 on Oricon's weekly manga ranking chart.

It will be the eighth manga series to top 20 million copies since Oricon began posting its book ranking charts in 2008. The other series include Attack on Titan (which accomplished the feat with the 11th volume last month), Kimi ni Todoke, One Piece, and Naruto.

The Kuroko's Basketball TV Anime Navigation Book Kuro Navi ranked #3 on the overall book ranking chart the previous week, and it only dropped to #4 in the more recent weekly chart. The original manga series is poised to be the third highest-selling manga series this year, after One Piece and Attack on Titan.

Magi Manga Has 13 Million Copies in Circulation



The wraparound jacket band on the 19th volume of Shinobu Ohtaka's Magi - The Labyrinth of Magic manga announced on Friday that the series has over 13 million copies in circulation.

Ohtaka's manga re-imagines characters from the classic story One Thousand and One Nights (also known as Arabian Nights). Viz Media is releasing the manga in North America. Aniplex USA licensed the anime adaptation and will release it in two box sets next year. The second season premiered on October 6.

Kodansha Comics Adds Attack on Titan: Before the Fall, No Regrets Spinoff Manga



North American manga publisher Kodansha Comics announced at its New York Comic Con panel on Friday that it has licensed two spinoff manga based on Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan manga: Satoshi Shiki and Ryō Suzukaze's Attack on Titan: Before the Fall, and Hikaru Suruga and Gan Sunaaku's Shingeki no Kyojin Gaiden: Kuinaki Sentaku (Attack on Titan: No Regrets).

Satoshi Shiki's (Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, Kami-Kaze, Riot) Attack on Titan: Before the Fall manga is based on author Ryō Suzukaze and artist THORES Shibamoto's (Trinity Blood) prequel light novel series of the same name. Shiki launched the manga in the October issue of Kodansha's Monthly Shōnen Sirius magazine on August 26. The first of Suzukaze and Shibamoto's light novels shipped in Japan in 2011, and the third novel shipped in June 2012. The story of the light novel series takes place before Isayama's original manga and follows Anheru, a member of the Sur.veyCorps who works in weapons development. Anheru is tired of seeing the corpses of his fellow Sur.vey Corps members, and is working to design equipment that will allow humans to be able to kill Titans. Thus far, no one has been able to find out the weak point of the Titans, and so no one has managed to kill one. However, government conservatives think that fighting against Titans is unnecessary, and order the dissolution of the Sur.vey Corps. Vertical announced earlier on Friday that it had licensed the light novel series. Vertical's light novel debuts in North America summer 2014, and Kodansha Comics will debut the manga version starting in spring 2014.



Suruga previewed the Shingeki no Kyojin Gaiden: Kuinaki Sentaku shōjo manga in the November issue of Kodansha's ARIA magazine on September 28. The full launch of the manga will run in the magazine in November. The manga focuses on Captain Levi's past, including his first encounter with Commander Erwin and how he entered the Sur.vey Corps. Nitroplus writer Gan Sunaaku (Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet) is in charge of the manga's scripts. Kodansha Comics will debut the manga in North America in summer 2014.

Isayama's original Attack on Titan manga depicts the battles between humans and the giants who now rule the world outside humans' walled enclaves. Isayama launched the series in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2009, and the manga now has 25 million copies in print. Kodansha Comics is publishing the manga in North America on a monthly basis until it is caught up with the Japanese releases.

Both Funimation and Crunchyroll streamed the anime version of the manga as it aired in Japan, and Funimation will release the series on home video next year.

Oneechan ga Kita Sisterly Love 4-Panel Manga Gets TV Anime



The December issue of Takeshobo's Manga Life magazine is announcing on Thursday that a television anime of Rikō Anzai's four-panel manga Oneechan ga Kita (My Big Sister Arrived) will premiere next January.

The story revolves around Tomoya Mizuhara, a 13-year-old boy who suddenly gains a big sister when his father remarries. 17-year-old Ichika is a little strange, and her affection for Tomoya is rather overwhelming, if not scary. On top of things, Ichika's friend Ruri is the ultimate sadist. Then there is Ichika's big-breasted quarter-Japanese friend Marina.

The manga began in Manga Life, although it has also appeared in the sibling magazine Manga Life MOMO. Takeshobo published the second book volume of the manga this past February.

Kami-sama no Iu Toori Horror Survival Manga Gets Film



This year's 46th issue of Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine is announcing on October 16 that a film adaptation of Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Akeji Fujimura's Kami-sama no Iu Toori (Just as God Said) manga has been green-lit.

The story of the original horror-survival manga begins when strange and frightening things start happening at Shun Takahata's high school. After his teacher is killed, he and his classmates must play horrifying games in order to avoid death.

Kaneshiro wrote the story while Fujimura drew the artwork for the Kami-sama no Iu Toori manga's first arc in Kodansha's monthly Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine from 2011 to 2012. The manga resumed with a second arc ("Ni") in this year's seventh issue of Weekly Shōnen Magazine.

Yūsuke Ozaki's Majestic Prince Manga Ends



The 102nd issue of Kadokawa's Kadokawa Niconico Ace digital manga magazine published the final chapter of Fields and Yūsuke Ozaki's Ginga Kikōtai Majestic Prince manga on Wednesday. The second and final volume in the series will ship on November 9.

Ozaki had launched the manga in Kadokawa's Newtype Ace magazine in 2012. The manga switched publication to Kadokawa Niconico Ace when Newtype Ace ceased publication in July.

The manga is a separate series from Rando Ayamine and Hikaru Niijima's original manga that inspired the 24-episode television anime series that aired earlier this year.

Sentai Filmworks licensed the anime for digital and home video release in North America. Crunchyroll is streaming the anime outside of Japan.

Tokyo Ravens: Red And White Spinoff Manga Ends



Azumi Mochizuki's Tokyo Ravens spinoff manga Tokyo Ravens: Red And White ended in the November issue of Kadokawa's Monthly Dragon Age magazine on Wednesday. Kadokawa also published the manga's first compiled volume on Wednesday. Mochizuki launched the series last year.

The story takes place in a cram school that trains onmyōji (practitioners of ancient Japanese occultism). There is a special "miko training class" that was initially for girls only. The story's hero is male, but he possesses the same powers as the girls in the school. But what will happen when he enrolls in a paradise full of girls--?

Kouhei Azano launched the original Tokyo Ravens light novel series in May 2010 with illustrations by Sumihei. Kadokawa will publish the 10th novel on October 19. Atsushi Suzumi is drawing the main manga adaptation of the story in Kadokawa's Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine, Ran Kuze (Tenshin ~World War Angel~) is drawing the Tokyo Ravens: Sword of Song spinoff in Kodansha's Monthly Shōnen Rival magazine, and COMTA drew the Tokyo Ravens: Tokyo Fox spinoff manga.

Azano's light novel series is also inspiring a television anime series that premiered on Tuesday. Funimation is streaming the series as it airs in Japan.

The Tyrant Falls In Love Spinoff Manga Gets New Chapter




The November issue of Kaiohsha's Gush magazine announced on Monday that manga creator Hinako Takanaga will publish a new chapter of the Bokutachi no Shippai spinoff of her The Tyrant Falls in Love (Koi suru Bo-kun) boys-love manga. The chapter with a color opening page will run in the next issue on November 7. Takanaga previously published two chapters of the Bokutachi wa Shippai manga in 2008.

According to the preview, the characters Masaki and Morinaga's big brother Kunihiro will appear in the new chapter.

Takanaga launched The Tyrant Falls in Love series in Kaiohsha's Gush magazine in 2004 and it wrapped last year after eight compiled volumes. A two-episode original anime video was released in 2010. The series is itself a spinoff of Takanaga's Challengers manga.

Digital Manga Inc. (DMI) licensed The Tyrant Falls in Love for North American release in 2009, and released the final compiled volume last month.

Bamboo Blade B Manga to End in November




The November issue of Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine is confirming on Saturday that Masahiro Totsuka and Neko Sutajio's Bamboo Blade B manga will end in the next issue on November 12. Bamboo Blade B launched in 2009 as a spinoff of Totsuka and Aguri Igarashi's original Bamboo Blade manga.

The story follows Yū Ōkido, a tall, self-conscious middle-school girl who once practiced kendō (Japanese swordsmanship) in elementary school. The 11th volume of Bamboo Blade B shipped in Japan in May.

Yen Press released the original manga in North America and the final volume shipped last year. AIC A.S.T.A. adapted the manga into a television anime series in 2007-2008, and Funimation released the anime in North America. A second spinoff, Bamboo Blade C, launched in Monthly Big Gangan in May.
