How does sleep deprivation kill you? I know it can be torturesome to not sleep in a long time (watch a movie in German class about how sometimes the Stasi would keep you awake in the interrogation room until you cracked).

This did not happen, but in theory it is possible something similar like this could happen before they would die. It is a well written story indeed.

That's like a disorder though. I mean like for a normal person. If someone just constantly kept you awake, could you die from being constantly awake? Say for like...1-3 weeks.

Well I believe you could, if the people with the disorder and lab rats die after a period without sleep I see no reason why you could not die if someone keeps you awake. There were some claims that people died because of sleep deprivation, but none were proven, and most likely just contributed to the death since sleep deprivation causes changes in metabolism, blood pressure and other body functions.

I always wondered if not sleeping kills you, and if it does, how. Now I wonder...what makes someone sleepy?

Your body shuts off vital process's because it can not register the different parts of the body. Also, the immune system becomes inept, as well the body can no longer regulate its temperature properly.

Pretty long but it caught my interest so I read it. I usually never read things for fun. Can someone explain the end to me? I sorta lost my place I think and didn't completely get it.

Tl;dr 5 people were put in a chamber with a mixture of gas/oxygen. They were sleep deprived and they started going mad after the first 5 days.
They ate their own flesh and never communicated. Once they were out after the 15th day 2 of the subjects died during surgery. The other 3 were put back in the chamber along with some scientists. The scientists were scared as fuck so they shot the subjects.
Most thrilling part was when one of the subjects said this:
The scientist asked him what he was and he said

"Have you forgotten so easily?" The subject asked. “We are you." “We are the madness that lurks within you all, begging to be free at every moment in your deepest animal mind." “We are what you hide from in your beds every night. We are what you sedate into silence and paralysis when you go to the nocturnal haven where we cannot tread."
