[HELP] How do i make Transperant Backgrounds.

Ok, How do i make a transparent background using photoshop Cs2.
Look at my sig, OKay.. i wont to make the back ground tranparent and just the red text but i dont know how.

wen i got to photoshop and i make a new canvas i make the background transparent and then the background goes to gray and dark gray boxes then wen i save it the background becomes white. Liek on my signature and my avatar.

Ill thank any1 who helps me.
