Crosshairs history :P answer me this

Can anyone tell me how and why the crosshairs are liek the way they are in videogames.
i have a friend convinced that crosshairs imply that the person is shooting in "ironsights"
I think its just there for the sake of the mechanism of the game
so if anyone could just provide me with tidbits of the origional reason for ironsights and what it "implies" just reply :P thanks

like whats the original purpose of the cross hair seriously he is so convinced that its supposed to imply that your ironsighting but i think its just the game producers wanted to apply the concept that your aiming at the center of your screen and whatnot
