You don't need a gray background... You just go into photoshop and set a transparent background then c+p your render/picture or create text on top of the render.
I know everyone knows about this, and really doesn't mind it, but it's starting to bug me a bit. If you set an image with an invisible back drop as your avatar, the back drop becomes white, and the image looks crappy.
I know this can be overcome very easily by just adding a gray back ground to your image, regardless, how hard would it be to change this?

Whenever I upload it as my avatar, the transparent background becomes white.
try upload ur avatar at ImageShack® - Image Hosting
Haze and creepy choob save the day. IMO try illustrator as well, especially if you're making your sig from scratch.

Don't upload it through Imageshack or whatever, just do Browse>Choose your file>Upload
