Your lie in April is probably the best romance anime series. Movies wise there are a few, but i'm not that interested.

Welcome to the NHK is also a really good one, although from an odd angle.

[spoilers ahead] Gon going beast mode on Pitou is the only thing I hear of when people suggest it as a shonen. I don't recall many more fights being out of the ordinary, but enjoyed Killuas character a lot. [End spoilers]

HxH is by far the best of shonen anime at the moment.
    >Consistent system.
    >Good arcs with relative intrigue(spider/chimera).
    >Animation/soundtrack is good.
    >Overall driving force.
    >Relatively good amount of progression vs. run-time.
    >Suspense/tactics.

This is of course comparing shonen. I feel that HxH brings more to the table than any shonen anime.

The only competitor I see coming anywhere near it would be One Piece. However One Piece in it's entirety is significantly worse than HxH.

Really, there just aren't that many good shonen around.
