Aside the fact your version is blurry, i believe you did a fine job at making it look similiar (if people say they look the same, you should be proud lol).

What i dislike are the bubbles on the paws as they have a weird black shadow, the tail looks cool but doesn't have much sense, but most important the lights are quite bad: the yellow blur in the middle is just overlayed, it doesn't lighten up the area, same for the lines you added in the first version.

Basically you've kind of copied what he has done, then you messed it up, thus it's a good work if your goal was to mimic somebody else's work, but a bad one if your goal was to give the image your "Ooomph".
