Having a hero protagonist is fine, but when he's an empty shell meant to be self insertable and the setting IS NOT porn/hentai, then yeah, the protagonist sucks.

I'm not saying whatever you are claiming is a bad protagonist, just that i think you missed the point.

A small note before I write these two paragraphs: I haven't actually read any of the original materials, I've just seen the first 4 episodes of the anime adaptation. Why? Idk, stuff. If you can tell me why the manga is better and worth going through, I might give it a shot at some point, but so far I don't think the adaptation is the problem, as you might have realised.

Just compare the "protagonist" of SAO and Accel World, both written by Kawahara. It's so blatantly obvious that SAO predates AW and it's even more obvious how generic Kirito is, how his character literally fits with whatever great hero trope is being presented in the current episode or chapter. He has no progression, presented as crudely as possible while still retaining enough heroism, power and intellect to single-handedly take on anything and fix everything. On the other hand Haru is far from ideal, hardly a protagonist compared to Kirito. He is flawed, selfish and AW pretty much deals with him growing and developing his character, rather than molding him to fit heroic tropes that kids see as ideals. He deals with insecurity, a conflict between what's right and what he wants, etc.

Whether you want to believe it or not, not every "hero type protagonist" is Kirito-like, and I would definitely argue that being Kirito-like, if anything, is a negative thing when it comes to character quality. While I can definitely stomach someone like Kirito being a plot device or something irrelevant to whatever deeper shit an anime is supposed to have, I just cannot stand him as the mc.

I'm sorry, but from the 4 episodes I've seen Tatsumi does shit to cope with loss. The entire torturing and dying friends shit is mainly used as a fucking plot device and aside from the occasional flashback or "I have to continue this quest for them" shit they might as well have said Tatsumi never knew them to start off with. Just like with Kirito you are identifying with his heroic traits such as persistence, courage, blah blah blah and being all like "shit yeah, this guy is cool, he swings a sword and doesn't give shit about baddies that look 10x as tough". On the other hand I've seen shitloads of people hate Haru and AW solely because they actually do fucking identify with someone who would give up something that is "right" for selfish love, someone who's a coward and cannot face his issues and they simply cannot handle human flaws in someone who's supposed to be a hero.

tl;dr too much talk about SAO and AW, but I like making that comparison when talking about generic heroes. Tatsumi = Kirito = I will fit your ideal hero archetype != protagonists from pretty much any decent anime.

I dislike haru too, but that's just because he isn't interesting imo. I find AW's female protagonist to be more of an issue than haru though.

The issue with that being would be SAO wouldn't be how it is now due to the many different genre worlds that are with the virtual world.
What they should have done was just stick to the first SAO world and not change at all. They could have made the shows a lot longer, instead of ending Aincrad off by killing Kayaba.

Akame ga killl on the other hand is a nice anime, I have watched all the current episodes and only read some of the manga.
