Yes they can be taken back and it's happened to me before. I contacted Amazon and got through to a manager but they gave me the same old BS story of how they can't give me any details.

I wasn't left in the negatives because I had some balance on my account but if I didn't I would have probably gone negative or be at zero.

If they're carded, they will most likely withheld the funds. I'd suggest using the balance as soon as you have it. There's still risk though, because if those funds were carded like a day or two before you receiving them, most likely an investigation is going on with them already, and as soon as Amazon sees a change in them, they might withheld the funds. Good luck though.

Well, there's nothing you can do now. If the funds get withheld, you're done for; they won't come back. Just gotta use them as fast as you can.

I would order something fast because since the code was bought off of Amazon directly they have the power to withhold it.

I think you should order something fast and get it shipped out. Even if the funds are withheld, they won't cancel the order, they will just deduct whatever amount you have in your account.
