However, the most astonishing (and sickening) fact about deaths under Communist atheism was the short amount of time over which that killing occurred—mostly in its first 3 to 4 decades of its existence, within a given country.
Thus, regardless of whether you believe Islam killed 2 million or 20 million (and either of those numbers are gross underestimates, given the 1500 year long Islamic Slave Trade and the Arab Conquest, neither of which kept records of the civilisations they annihilated), atheism is still the “winner” in terms of dishing out violent death—at least as far as we know.
Moreover, atheist killing did not end with the fall of the Iron Curtain or the demise of Chinese Communism. The legacy of Communism, even in China, before WTO, led to child trafficking, abject poverty, women-trafficking and prostitution (which led to untold deaths), as well as abortions in all these countries.
And, regardless of how you might feel politically about abortion, it is factual that abortion has negatively affected population growth throughout the former Iron Curtain—which makes abortion a material killer of the population, even to atheists and Pro-Choicers who might believe the unborn are not “lives”.
Abortion rates in Russia, in particular, were astounding until Putin’s official support of reviving the Orthodox Church and (with Abramovich’s help) Orthodox Judaism—both of which have actively and successfully reduced abortion among Christian and Jewish Russians. Before this, for example, there were (see Wikipedia links):
Around 5.6 million abortions (or about 5% of the population) in 1965
2.11 Million in 2001 (about 2 % of the population)
1.6 million in 2005
380,000 as of 2010 and now declining, but 380,000 was the world’s highest number and rate at the time
And all these numbers are just in the last 50 years. Before that, Russia became the first European country to legalise abortion in 1920, and in that first year over 4.2 million abortions occurred, with many being forced. Those numbers remained around 3 to 4 million EACH year, with 1965 being the peak year. At an average of 3.5 million abortions a year, that comes to over 280 million deaths between 1920 and 2001, not including the 2 million of 2001!
So, if you’re looking for a “religious” culprit to claim as history’s greatest ideological killer, look no further than the religion of non-belief!
