I'd say Violet Evergarden if you haven't seen it. It has a good narrative and awesome animation/artwork. Besides that, I'd go with Kimi no na wa (aka your name). Also as a third option, Assassination Classroom has a good story and character development.

For someone beginning anime I would suggest something sad like Your Lie in April or Something action heavy like Tokyo Ghoul depending on what you like.

Its hard to tell which is good to start with, is there anything in particular you are interested in. if not i will just randomly name some i liked.

Initial D ( illegal racing , older anime series has a good amount of episodes)

Air gear ( Guy lived with some sisters and gets into air gear, rollerblades with an engine, fun to watch but sadly ended after 25 episodes)

Gundam ( Mecha anime of which are alot of different ones, mecha is like big fighting robots in which a person normally is the pilot)

Log Horizon ( people stuck in a virtual world and adapting to the situation with a good story)

Sword art online ( Also people stuck in a virtual world but on purpose by the creator of the game)

Overlord ( virtual world someone stayed when the server of a game got shut down and now he is stuck, difference is he is like the bad person in the anime which is more rare to find)

Code geass ( about a prince in a school that is gonna fight the system with the help of a geass which allows him to manipulate people, deep story and is fully ended after the second season, a good amount of plot twists )
