Whale of a time (CnC please?)

Hey guys, I was just attempting to do something different to my usual anime stock renders which are getting old. What I attempted to do was create a real mellow sort of piece with a nice whale stock I found while randomly googling "stock photos".

Here's the stock I used:



and the single render thingo I used: (only used it once on like 28% opacity I think)



And last but not least, the final result:

I don't like the weird effect the whale got, but I didn't really notice it when I was making it, but now it's glaring out at me.

So yeah, I need some CnC. Also, I'm truly terrible about picking text positions/styles, if anyone could give me spme pointers on what to look for, that would be swell too

Umm, quite a bit of stuff? Hue + Sat, brushes, gmap, Photo filters, more brushes... I dunno there was quite a bit. Oh yeah fibres + clouds etc.

I get the theme, but still feels like it's missing something.

Yeah I much prefer the 2nd one as well, I also get the feeling that it's missing something...text perhaps..maybe a different style on the other side so it's not so...uniform and shit. I dunno.

I think if you actually kept some of the colors on the fractal..it wouldn't look bad.
This should have more of a serene feel to it,
as is..it looks like the whale is being consumed by demonic shadows lol.

I didn't really use the fractal, just one in the left corner for a little wavy effect, erased the rest. Most of the other stuff was just brushes. I'll work on coloring and lighting, i'm only just starting PS, so I appreciate the CnC

EDIT: Okay I did a quick retouch, couldn't do much about the fractal because I'd applied the image so many times. I had a go at adding some lighting to the piece, I reckon it looks okay; But I could be wrong:
