Unless you're going to RAID the SSDs, I'd recommend getting one SSD and not 2. You'll get a 10-20% performance increase due to the size of the drive (bigger drives operate faster), and if you shop the sales, you'll probably save 25% $. Going RAID is pretty dumb imo for SSDs; you're never going to notice any difference in speed. It's really just for bragging rights.

It is for bragging rights, I'm building for the lol factor as well to game with out lagging and do my graphic design at the same time.

Actually in regards to performance that isn't quite true. You're thinking of NCQ technology that is only in mechanical hard drives which is essentially a larger and highly optimised queue capacity along with higher burst read speed due to higher density. With an SSD or any similar flash memory you have completely uniform access speed across the chip which makes the same principle pointless. The only instance in which a larger SSD will out perform a smaller SSD is if it had a greater number of channels which is rarely the case as long as your comparing two SSD's within the same tier. There are also some cases where higher capacity SSD's are slower because they have to use a different model of memory to suit the density requirements.

In my opinion though, I would go with two smaller SSD's but don't use them in a striped array. Just have two seperate drives, one as a main OS drive, the other as a scratch disk.

In theory, you are correct, and I would normally agree with you. In practice, you are wrong. Larger drives are faster, and this is consistent with all manufacturers. I did a lot of research on this out of curiosity a few years ago, and a solid state physicist I have crossed paths with at work that works on this stuff on the materials level said it's usually due to the drive's ability to organize data faster, similarly as to the emptier the drive, the faster it runs.

Bottom line though is he said he has a budget. You can definitely save money by buying one larger drive vs. 2 smaller ones, and you really aren't going to notice a difference in performance without benchmark tools.

An SSD's ability to organise data is through the amount of channels it has. Most drives within the same series have the same amount so it becomes a moot point. A few years ago SSD's were inferior. They used shoddy controllers, used memory with higher degradation rates and most of them used on-the-fly compression instead of in-house, not to mention the really bad garbage collection systems on the smaller drives. Trust me, I was part of a team that had to come up with the most efficient solution to deploy SSD's to a studio with over 300 workstations. We had to take everything into account. In the end there are no performance benefits of getting a larger SSD, just as there weren't any greater performance benefits in getting 2 x SSD's in a striped array. They're too similar in every aspect and nothing we can do in everyday use will be able to saturate the bandwidth enough to notice a difference.

I do agree with you in regards to the budget aspects though.

120GB is enough for the system. Hell, 60GB is enough.
