First off it's a heck of a lot easier to install an E3 Flasher (AKA a Chip) into the older Generation PS3s (Phat PS3s = Gen 1 and 2 | Slims = Gen 3 and 4). From there you can then downgrade your firmware to 3.55 to allow the Jailbreaking process to take place, seeing as 3.55 is the only version you can do it from. Once on 3.55, you can upgrade to the later 4.XX jailbreak firmwares that have been made official.
