If all you want is underwater footage you should be good just picking up the waterkit with the camera. You don't really need to go for the HERO 3 unless you really want top notch quality (1080p60fps) you should be good with the original HERO. But if you plan on using it alot on weekends you could go for the HERO 3

The hero3 White is only 1080p30fps, like the basic one

yeah the HERO3+ ( 300$) thats the 60fps one. Other 2 are 30fps and like 90$ difference. The Hero3 White has Wifi and a removable battery
First one works fine (I have no gopro exp)
I have a HERO 3+ Black Edition and use it almost every week. If you are only going to be filming underwater then the first one will be fine.
I got a GoPro black and NEVER use it.

Waste of money unless you're really into it.
My Go Pro got stolen, nice when we had it though.

If the specs are the same like you said, then you should just get the first one and spend the extra cash on accessories.
