Yeah you usually do need a degree but, you can get into the field without one if you're lucky. You can make pretty good money with just a Bachelors degree though.

Really depends on how well you did in high school.

Let me give you some general higher education advice that everyone should take. I don't care if you got straight As or not but people care way too much about prestige and "what college I'm attending next year" in high school their senior year. Think back to Sophomore year where the last competition is "what car I'm getting". You will never see 95% of all the people you graduate with past this point. Go to a community college and finish your core classes (if you took AP classes and passed the tests you don't have to stay 2 years) and then transfer to a state college or university and finish up your degree. General advice that will prove you're smarter than anyone in your high school. You will save at LEAST $20,000 dollars. For example, the community college in my state tuition is about $1,460~/year, the state college is $24,000~ with living, $12,000 if you drive. You just saved a minimum of $12,000 for 2 years. Of course, follow this if your grades are good enough. I'm a bit biased towards higher level education and believe everyone should take that opportunity, especially in the states where we emphasis higher level education even for experience based jobs (programming IE/computer science).

As for what you want to do? Figure it out, find some things you enjoy.

    Technology and computers?
    - Computer Science
    - Software Engineering
    - Cybersecurity / Information Security
    - Networking
    - Systems Administration
    - the list goes on

(I believe I saw Democritus refer to Infosec). As for cars and trucks, you said it yourself, a mechanic. Do what you love. I grew up with a kid that was absolutely in love with cars, that's all he saw, that's all he talked about, and I loved his determination because he conceded, mechanics don't make a surplus of money, but he wanted to do it because he loved cars. His goal currently is to open his own shop and I think he got his associates in high school through an opportunity school.

edit: wanted to add, you don't know what you even want to do. Look up computer related jobs such that I've listed and see if any of these interest you. Have you done any programming and enjoyed that? Go for a BS Computer Science. Enjoy the wires, TCPIP and the OSI Model? Networking. You need to explore the internet as well as explore yourself.

edit2: A great paying job that actually doesn't need college? A network engineer. Networking is basically certification based (CCENT, CCNA, CCNP).

Not really. There are tons of jobs out there (Plumber, Welder, Electrician,) that don't require any schooling except for your High School Diploma.

They may not make as much, but since you don't have to pay $200k for a shitty piece of paper, you'll be making more in the long run. Plus, there is always an opening for an apprenticeship, or even a job at your local cabinet making place. The reason there are so many of these jobs, is because no one wants to become a plumber, or a welder, or an electrician. They want to spend $566,000 to become a Doctor.

That's what I mean, there's always trades and things like that... my dad lost his job maybe 6 years back and they paid for him to go back to school so he went for HVAC and absolutely loved it. He knows people that he went to school with that are making 30-40$ an hour doing that it's wild.

And that guy making $30-$40/hour doesn't have to put away a huge chunk of his pay into student loans.

It depends on your state too, and the type of cop you make.

School never interested me, and to be honest college didn't either. Except for making cool robots.

But it's not that the stuff isn't interesting. It's just I only have one goal.

    To be the man.

True story, I am moving east to live with my grandma to go to a community college out there. The only thing is like the OP I am very into law enforcement but they also have a ton of different IT routes you can go. Now ultimately I have been wanting to become a police officer for a very long time I am even training for it. But I am a huge fucking nerd who sits on a computer most of my free time, so would it not be maybe a bit more beneficial to do something I like? Because I know IT guys make a lot more than police officers that's for sure. But I am not sure if money is what I am after, what market do you think needs more people?

You're interested in Law Enforcement? You basically only need 8th grade English, and 10th grade math to go into that. You should be fine.

thats not a college thing, thats having fun. You can work a mill job or construction. Forestry's an option if you're in the right spot. Tree planting is profitable if you work fast.
