Nilly's Realm, wut.

So yeah, NR is shutting down, accoriding to Nilly on his forums, he says he wants to fix some more bugs with the server (what bugs? most stable server ever still) and even after that that it might be up for a week or so. :P

So, do you guys think Nilly is gonna release the source (if it does shut down, but I think it's gonna stay up because his devs have the source and I think they can keep it up themself, especially ossi xP)

Apparently Nilly is working on a new game though, that's why this is happening.

Imo, he shouldn't release the source, every server owner will drop whatever they did to their current source and resort to NR Source, it would ruin the pserver idea/community.
Of course, most server owners/localhost server players would probably vote yes.

Nilly has always contemplated on whether or not to release the source. I would never say yes because of the work him and his team spent on it but I guess it might be considered selfish for others as it can help the Private Server community.

The community would have never progressed past Botmaker's java source if everyone thought this. The community has advanced by releasing work that many people have worked very hard on. I don't see why this would ruin the pserver community.

Because very few in this community can make things so if you compare that with the rest of the community, it could become ruined. Very few servers stay on the same source they've been working on. They tend to change sources where the flow of the rest of the community resides in

That "very few" has grown in number and as the quality standard goes up in servers it also tends to attract more people. In that crowd may possess new members of the community who can contribute.

I'm sure this just means improvement, even if for the first two months people scramble on server setup and fishing out a ton of redundant tutorials.

I thought this community was all about making improvements on servers.
If everyone thought like this, then we would have botmaker hosting his own server with his java source and Creepylava hosting his own server, since not many people want to/can spend time building a server from scratch.
And how would this ruin the idea of a private server? We would still have private servers, just that we would have a better one to make improvements on.
And the community would still be there, because there would still be creative people here coming up with new ideas for private servers.
And also, just because there's a new release, doesn't mean everyone will move onto that one. Since we still have people using different sources, some still use the club source, some use fabiano, some use seraphs and some use doomed(For whatever reason).

sure maybe people like proph and kithi and trav and ossi and what not will still work on shit but not most of the owners of the pservers out today, considering most of these owners have nothing added except a database to the source.

We didn´t think anyone would add much to Phoenix 1 when it came out... then Doomed came along with their 2834973523 overpowered items. Your point about not adding anything is invalid. The fact that it´s a very stable server would serve as a building canvas for those who do want to add things.

The fact that only a few people will be able to add things to the source other than simple behaviors or items has remained true for the community on many releases.

These servers doesn't really get any players anyways and will go down after ~1 week or so, so it doesn't really matter. There will still be more people than the ones you mentioned above that will actually try to add stuff to their servers.
I nilly decided to release this, I would see it as a good thing for the community as what we're striving for is a more stable and playable server source.

So it's better that nilly takes the source to his grave and just let RotMG private servers die a slow death? So what if there are a hundred servers running the same source. That's the way it's always been for any emulator project. It's up to the owners to make their server unique, not the initial source.

Nilly is the only person that has attempted to actually fix the thousands of bugs and piss poor stability of these servers. It's the only source that has been in constant development by a real programmer. Prod source development stopped long ago and the list of bugs with it is mind boggling. So if you're happy with that then by all means, use it. Those of us that actually care about server stability and working features would rather start with something like nilly's and expand from there instead of wasting our time with "lesser" sources.

And since no one really gives a shit about RotMG the game to begin with anymore, nilly's is likely the last good source we will ever see released. So if he doesn't release it, then RotMG private servers are doomed in general.

im saying hes done a lot to the source, so MOST people (excluding the actual fucking coders on this section, ossi, kithi, trav, etc.) will just leech the source and not work on/add anything to any other source

obviously id use it too if he released it, but i wouldnt even be able to think of anything to add, except more custom items and maps and bosses and behaviors and shit liek that lol

If I were Nilly, I'd release the source but strip away the most important things like the Marketplace, emojis, and PM system, just leaving bug fixes in. Just like you said, stability is the most important so the content imo shouldn't be in there if he releases it.
