Saves costs. People will still buy 40oz bottles of beer no matter what they're in, so the companies started using plastic as a better alternative on their end.
I work for Budweiser as a delivery guy in the summer.
Miller and Coors have changed to plastic, but any Budweiser delivered 40oz product is still in glass.
