Reborn Weekly #2
We’re back with another news post! This week, we’ll delve a little into our main goal for Phoenix Realms and how our vision translates to solid development goals.
“We plan on being different.”
If you’ve been around private servers for at least a little time, you’ve seen variations of this quote being tossed around by new private server projects that hope to become a large and growing servers, but what does it mean? Why do people want to be different? How would they become different?
At Phoenix, we’ve decided to be different by method. By creating high quality standards on well-thought concepts, we’ve been able to define our pillars of game design while staying true to what matters most in the server.
One of our points of inspiration comes from production Realm of the Mad God itself, and its different stages of growth and development. Aside from being the most popular and stable version of Realm of the Mad God available on the web, we can look back on what production did best, and what means it took to gain and keep high popularity during its glory days.
One such game concept would be the reward incentive, and the less-handicapped competition system, where players would be able to experience the joys of hunting rare items and eventually earning them as not just functional power, but also as “trophy value” that helps the player justify their efforts and their joys of making such a find.
The downside of it happens to be directly related to this. Players often spend a large bulk of their hours on Realm of the Mad God under an unfulfilling limbo where efforts are often laid in vain, where fortunes die down in days, and where skill plays an unsatisfactorily low role in the indirect player vs. player fortune competition.
We aim to address all these problems by restructuring player progression in our game, refining dungeon and realm behaviors, and carefully tuning our incentives. This way, we can keep the players’ thrill of the hunt, all while giving them value towards skillful play and longer-term progress.
Our next point of reference lies in none other than the original Phoenix Realms. Phoenix Realms was by far the most prolific server of its time, and Phoenix Realms 2 aims to gain its former glory. A good portion of our successful features will be making a return in the phoenix’s rebirth, such as minigames and leaderboards. We have also decided to bring back at least some, if not all of the classes featured in the original Phoenix, as they were one of the defining features of the server. Of course this time around, we’ll be spending much more effort on their balancing. Conversely, we’ll also be looking at the factors that pulled down the original Phoenix, and use those as cautious reminders of the importance of a capable server system and a friendly, professional staff team.
Aside from this, we try to keep it close to the original RotMG, but that’s not to say that we have our own plans for expanding content and more ways to have fun in the server.
All of these factors and more come into play when we’re creating content for the release of Phoenix Realms. Our goal is to create a server of Realm of the Mad God that promises a new outlook on the pure player experience, all under a capable, professional server with plenty of creativity to back future content.
