Computer upgrade suggestions
Right now I'm running a gtx 570 ti with a first generation i7 cpu

I'm going to upgrade it to a gtx 970 with a 7i or i5 that benchmarks atleast 12k

Do you guys have any suggestions you want to throw in?

Like motherboard, power supplies, idk, any advice
First time I'll be doing this

Your GPU and CPU seem fine... Depending on your budget you may be able to get some better equipment.

The 970 isn't bad, its just very old.

Case is a big one, fans unknown, suggestions?
@Predator

They're not fine, they run the games today fine but they don't go as high as you would need it to go these days.

If not the 970, what would you suggest?

I'm thinking about the GTX 970 4G in any case. I also heard the 780 TI is alright, but outdated.

@ @Snake I meant that if cooling will be okay , since new GPU will probably need better fans and stuff.

The 970 is perfectly capable of running on 1080p and Med settings.

Like I said, its all about your budget.

What would you suggest though? If you were in my position.
I'm not spending much and I'm not buying it first hand either, my little brother owns a gaming pc and I don't intend on spending alot of money.
I'm looking at 200 euro used graphics card max and 200-250 euro processor used max.

I'm not aware of what else I'd have to put in my pc to make it all run smooth, that's my problem.
@Trol553 I'm definitely gonna have to put something new in, that's certain.

Only your CPU and GPU should effect your gaming performance directly. Anything else such as fans, RAM, mobo is just added necessities. If they aren't broken and you aren't doing a full rig upgrade you don't have to worry about those things.

Directly right off the bat, you need a better GPU. Simple as that.

Did a quick Google search and saw that the GTX 1060 is going for $199 brand new on various online sites. On paper, the 1060 should beat the 970 out right.

The Intel i5 6600K is currently $220 on New Egg. There's no need to dish the extra money for an i7 if all you are doing is gaming. The 6600K gets the job done and does it well.

Here are the links to the stuff I'm talking about.

You do have a nice jump for the graphics card. Why not go to a 1060 or 1070?

I agree with Predator and Matthew_rotmg's suggestion, 1060 would do a very good job for the next few years running along with the i5 6600k would definitely help you very much. 970 wouldn't be a good deal right now when there is 1050,1060 and 1070s out there that you can get. 970 will probably lower in price sooner or later by a lot but 1060 and 6600k would be worth it with your budget.

I would go this.

pc partpicker com /list/ZH7t9W

If you're not planning on overclocking you can switch the i5-6600k to a i5-6400 or i5-6500. Also if you're not planning on overclocking or upgrading the cpu just switch the z-170 motherboard to a h170 motherboard instead (but you don't have to do this if you want to keep the DDR4-3000 RAM).

Also, a gtx 1050ti graphics card can play games on high settings at 1080p so if you're on a budget you should keep that in mind. A Radeon RX 480 4GB is slightly less cheaper than the GTX 1060 6GB while also performing a little less. A Radeon RX 480 8GB should have a similar price tag to the 1060 but performs better when playing Directx 12 games. Overall they're all great at 1080p. I think a GTX 1060 3GB wouldn't be bad too. It's cheaper than the rest but performs 10% less than the 6GB I think. Not sure.

I made a cheaper one.

That's the kind of advice I was looking for. Thanks dude! That saved me a shitload.
Perhaps I could look into getting a refund from newegg too, they should be doable?
But how about the intel xeon processors? I saw the benchmarks and they are extremely well.

This one benchmarks 13059 while the i5 6600k benchmarks 7882.
The intel xeon is 20$ cheaper.

IMO stick with the i5 6600K. It's apart of the Skylake line so it's the newest Intel has to offer. The Xeon runs at 2.7 Ghz while the 6600K runs at 3.3 Ghz. You can easily over clock the 6600K too. Not to sure about the Xeon because no one uses them for gaming.

You might need a different mobo to accommodate the Xeon too.

Not entirely sure if you're aware but, if you buy a i5 6600k you will have to buy a new motherboard and new DDR4 ram for it.

Since you said your CPU is a first generation i7 that'll mean it's an LGA 1366 or LGA 1156 socket, which skylake uses LGA 1151 meaning it would be incompatible with your current board, even LGA 1150 which was the previous generation before skylake wouldn't work with your current board.

Skylake also uses DDR4 meaning you will have to buy new RAM kits, spending more money.

Just thought I'd say this because from what I can tell, there hasn't been a mention about new a new motherboard or ram apart from when @MassDebater mentioned it but I'm not sure whether you acknowledged what he said.

If you did realise that you need the extra new stuff to make it work then just ignore this ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
