Github for learning computer science?

Co-worker told me that "Github" is the best way to learn computer science. What do you think about "Github"?

youtube would be good or books, i dont know what i would use github for learning

What do you mean exactly. GitHub is just a tool. It can be used for learning but that's like saying a computer is good for learning, it is just a tool in a long process of learning.

Use a git (like github) to upload all your coding projects. That way you have something to present to a potential employer. It's a "uploading" tool and not something that will teach you how to code lol.

personally, i've found github great for learning - i found a few open-source projects i cared enough about to help improve and went from there.
there can be a bit of a learning curve (depending on how much knowledge you're going in with), but it's definitely worth at least trying out.

See i initially learned the basics of coding from coursera and YouTube..then started working on small projects,there is a dedicated github forums where I meet few friendly souls who helped me out and point me everytime where i went wrong..then I tried to understand how to properly code using others codes..it made me to understand how one code like that..so a big yes,if you are a intermediate learner..github is one of those places to get started

I think github is good to hold your projects. Not so much to learn? Youtube would be the best place to learn. Most comp sci students learn off youtube, not from the lectures. The lecturers suck dick

If he means that you can download source codes and look at them, sure it's good. It won't teach you, you're going to have to learn on your own or from other sources

Agree, you can handle your projects there, but it is not an educational tool.

First mistake I see is your definition of computer science. Computer science is a lot more than programming. Largely it is math and theory, with programming as a supplement.

Computer Science major here. Computer Science is 100% programming, employers are looking for people who are good at programming, math is often not required. Although math is a requirement of the major, 50% of the job is programming and 50% is dick sucking.

The actual job is 100% programming. The actual major itself is not. Going by that knowledge, if someone wants to study computer science for the sake of preparing for study in university, they need to be aware of the math they'll get into.

It also means computer science doesn't even have to be what you do. Do something else, and learn programming on the side with projects. Or just do CS and so stuff on the side and you're golden.

Sure you have to prepare for the math, but for the most part it is independent of the programming unless you're doing higher level programming such as with deep learning. But yeah, computer science is exclusively about the software side of computer systems. 100% related to programming. You can wing the math or cram, which I did. Ask me anything about math lols
