Quite a bit of graphic RAM and performance is used for Windows Aero effects so setting your (Win7/Vista) computer for best performance could probably even let you play games much faster etc.

Windows are windows regardless of some of the performance intensive constant fade in effects that are so fast they're unnoticeable anyways. I don't care much for the gloss so I usually just set my comp for best performance mode.
