Ipod help needed

Im sorry if i posted this in the wrong section but i just got an ipod 1st gen from a friend and so i wanted to restore it but i can and it says that the ipod is in restore mode. When i click restore it says Ipod cannot be restored error code 21.
Can anyone plz tell me what i can do, i really want to use this ipod and i dont want to buy a new on
if you have another questions that you can ask me to help me i will be very glad to answer. Thanks

i mean when i turn on the ipod its always in restore mood and itunes says i should restore it.
also im trying to do the firm ware and ill get back if it works.
im not sure what to do i click it but nothing happens
