There are two reasons throwing is so good. First, Throw + A is fairly efficient damage (Throw + some combo of 5, 6, J is ok). Rook is a grappler, and usually does 10 damage for 1 card (sometimes 15, which is insane, but never mind). Even compared to the best thrower in the game, it's pretty awesome that Grave regularly does 19 damage for 2 cards.
The second reason is that your block is so strong, your opponent is forced to alter his range to not attack so much. This makes your throws much more likely to hit than, say, Rook, who can't punish attack nearly as well (fortunately Rook has 100 hp, so don't feel too sorry for him). Another strong deterrent to attack is your Q, which, well, beats everything ever.
On a related note, people tend to overrate Grave's J. Yes, it is awesome that it "wins" if they either throw or block. But 3/8 damage is, well, not a lot of damage for winning combat. I tend to use it a few times in the early game (where they are just so likely to block/throw). However, as the game progresses, supers make J an increasing liability, since they are always faster and since dodge -> super also becomes a good option.
