[Help]Overlays
heyyyyy any vb gods in this section know how to overlay a d3d layer over a window without injecting the game/program? for something similar to a xfire type effect but being external any help or pushes in the right direction would be great thanks guys
I'm not 100% sure of my answer being fully correct so don't hold me to it.

Overlaying with anything is a very hit and miss task, especially over a FPS game. The reason is that a FPS re-renders very quickly and so your overlaying layer will need to re-draw every time that the FPS re-draws. Now this is what D3D hooking utilizes: Hooking the d3d and redrawing at "endscene" which is called every time the FPS re-renders, this means it won't flicker over the top. Now with an external program, you can't sync it with the FPS re-rendering so it will flicker around a lot no matter how fast you redraw the program. However aside from games etc, you can usually be pretty safe with the "Topmost" property of your form.

So, basically my answer is, getting a non-flickering external window over any window on your computer isn't going to be easy even if it's possible.

No doubt I'm wrong on some points and am about to get flamed. Ah well.

Sounds legit .

No1 is going to provide you a copy&pasteable source. Learn D3D.

ur just about rediculous ay? lol who said i wanted a copy and paste source i asked simply for a push in the right direction ass... right now im using a technique where i am changing the handle of one of my forms to make it a child of the game and its not a fps but it does refresh to fast for my form to stay ontop without a small flicker... i was just simply asking if there was a better way thanks for being a shit dick and discouraging me... real nice brah

Q_Q less plox?

I said "Learn D3D". That's an advice for the right direction.

To make it flickerless you will have to learn DirectX.
rofl noobs.

win7+ use IDirect3DDevice9Ex's Overlay capabilities.
below win7 use DirectDraw(which is deprated and works like shit on nvidia cards)

wow thank you atleast this will push me in the right direction
if you want to code in .NET, SlimDX is a great piece of software for this purpose. I've been able to previously combine it with a quick C++ DLL to get everything set and working.

Otherwise , you can try extending the Windows Aero area to your entire app to overlay a windowed application.
