Good for a beginner?

I thought it looked cool in a couple of pictures. So I looked it up on youtube on different techniques for the "Aurora effect". This is the first thing I made on Photoshop. I just downloaded the trial for now. But I really like it. I think I could use some critiquing and maybe some ideas for something new

Lose the smudge crap in the middle or do something about it.

True, lose the smudge but without it it would be empty

I use it as a background.
The smudge part.... well I'm not sure exactly what it is. I took clouds and used the smudge tool. Like you said it's kind of something just there to fill it in.
I didn't take much time to draw it out like I should have. It's more of just a blob how it is right now.
