2500k is more bang for the buck; I paid about 90 more for .1 ghz, 2mb cache and multi threading... but I need what I can get when I am coding and dealing with shit that lags like fuck on my quad core w/ 8 gigs of ram
Get 2 HD 6990s and dual Crossfire them.

I have an i5 2500K w/ 16GB RAM. I never use more than 30% of the CPU, even on gaming... So much for needing / wanting to overclock it.
And, if you have multiple hard drives (3 or more), make sure that the motherboard is B3 stepping or it might die out lol (I think its already B3 but meh).
Get a nice graphics card and err, there's not much else you actually need.

Visual Studio... Loves memory. As does After Effects. Also, Windows Live Mail uses 1.6GB RAM (wtf?)
And it's not that much RAM, since I need to run 3 VMs on it (WinXP, WinVista, Win7) for Quality Assurance :P
Along with my i5, I got a GTX 460, 2 more screens (making a total of 3), so now I have a tonne of apps on.
Wait, maybe the 2500k is just better for gaming.
Well fuck, i7s are awesome anyway. would be so cash for editing/gfxing.

i5 is better money. I have no idea how I'd be able to even use my i5 efficiently (ie, constantly > 50% CPU), and I hardcore COD:BO, VS and video process.
I think I'd be able be fine with an i5 2300, and save myself the money.
