Database errors right? Thats because by viewing a specific page you invoke a php script which querys data from the database. If that database is currently being backed up and the data is locked for the purpose of backing it up, you aren't going to be able to alter or otherwise read from that data - which php scripts on a forum typically do. So the server waits and waits until you get a db error or a timeout error.
I don't develop much in the web-field so I could be wrong.
